Betty
Gordon affectionately called, Miss Annie by her mother, was born on December
13th in Baltimore Maryland. Her parents were Lawrence and Rosie Holly. The
studious Mrs. Gordon is a graduate of Douglas High School, Coppin State College
and Morgan State College. Now widowed, Betty is the proud mom to Rudolph Kevin
Gordon and Michael Keith Gordon. She is grandma to Jimond Gordon, Rudyi Shanay
Gordon.
Betty joined "The Star "around 1948 under the pastorate of Rev George Jacob Garnett who baptized her; and she has been a shooting star ever since. Betty has had many duties here at the Star. She is the Vacation Church School Director. She has worked as Sunday school teacher nursery and junior departments, Workers Conference where she demonstrated how to best prepare and instruct Sunday School lessons, committee member for the Domicillary care facility, member of the Board of Directors for the Morning Star's Day Care, Sanctuary and Revival choir member, Board of Christian Education member, Family Life Committee member, Pastor's Aide treasurer. Whew! Where does she find the time?
Mrs. Gordon's favorite hymns are "How Tedious and Tasteless the Hours" and "Great is Thy Faithfulness". Betty states "Because Great is thy faithfulness was my mother's favorite they both remind me that I never want to be absent from the presence of God." Psalm 91 is her favorite Bible passage because it makes her feel secure at all times. She loves the Sanctuary choir because, as she says, "The type of music we sing is what my mother exposed me to growing up, and I still love it."
Pork chops and soups are her favorite foods and her favorite pastime is traveling. Her favorite places to vacation are the islands, North Carolina and any place where nature is abundant." There I can see the handiwork of God", she says. Betty has special interest in reading poetry especially Paul Laurence Dunbar and Langston Hughes. She also enjoys listening to Negro Spirituals and reading dramatically to children and her church family. She has done this many times while performing in programs and plays presented at the "Star". Betty relaxes by reading and watching television.
Betty, a dedicated educator, has taught in the Irvington Community of Baltimore Maryland for 49 years. Having taught the children, their children, and now some of their grandchildren, she considers them her extended family.
Mrs. Gordon encourages us to "Keep engaging in the positive things that you are doing if you have the energy; the results are positive and beneficial to others and it encompasses that which is pleasing to God." Betty has a beautiful voice (she never mentioned her extraordinary singing voice in her interview with me), and her church wants to encourage her to keep singing because when she takes the microphone, the church gets quieter in anticipation. We don't want to miss a single note. We love you Betty!
