In Rememberance Of: Deacon Donald Brown | October 12, 1945 - September 24, 2005Donald L. Brown, son of Mabel Brown, was born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 12, 1945. He was educated in the Baltimore City School System and was graduated from Frederick Douglas High School in February 1963. He then attended Morgan State College, where he was a member of the Reserve Officers Training Corps. Donald was proud of his affiliation with the military and kept his uniform throughout the remainder of his life. It was at Morgan that Donald also refined his love of language and eloquent speech.

Donald began his career at Eastern Stainless Steel, but worked there for only a short period of time before securing employment with the Chesapeake and Potomac (C&P) Telephone Company. At C&P, Donald worked as a lineman, supervisor and manager but he most enjoyed working as a technician. In 2002, after 32 years of service, Donald retired from his position as Central Office Technician because of failing health.

Donald gave his life to Christ and was baptized at Morning Star Baptist Church, under the pastorate of the late Reverend Nathaniel Wicks, in 1954. He was steadfast in his faith and in his love for his church. Donald loved to sing and enjoyed listening to Mario Lanza, Luciano Pavoratti and Jackie Wilson because they, like him, were first tenors. He was a member of many choirs including: the Young Adult Choir, Samuel Ray Revival Choir, Sanctuary Choir, Garnett Male Chorus, Norman Muldrow Male Chorus, James Peterson Singers and Affirmation of Faith with One Voice Ecumenical Choir. It was on the Young Adult Choir that Donald met Darlene Harmon, whom he married on November 23, 1968. Donald and Darlene (who preceded him in death) were married for 35 years and were the proud parents of Daria Monique and Carol Raquel.

Donald held several offices at Morning Star, including Chairman of the Men's Ministry; but his proudest moment was in 1994 when he was ordained a Deacon. Deacon Brown was always trying to make improvements in the church and was instrumental in the design and implementation of the sound system. Even during his illness, Deacon Brown was known to coordinate meetings for installation or repairs from his hospital bed. When he was physically well (and sometimes not so well) Deacon Brown could be found at Morning Star's "Round Table" for Sunday breakfast.

Deacon Brown's melodious voice and pleasant, helpful disposition are missed at Morning Star. We take time to pay tribute to this quiet-spoken, industrious worker who so selflessly used his God-given talents while he was with us.
