From The Desk of the Pastor

Rev. Dr. Samuel Ray: Pastor Morning Star Baptist Church of ChristAdversity can either destroy or build up, depending on our response. No matter what the hardships or circumstances of life may be, we should draw closer to God.

As we go through life we will always be faced with a series of God-ordained opportunities, brilliantly disguised as problems and challenges. We need to give thanks and just keep on moving. We can't stop. Why should we face hardships alone when we can walk through them with God at our side and come out stronger and wiser?

"Whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything." James 1:2-4 NLT

Pastor's Bio

The Reverend Dr. Samuel Ray is a son of Morning Star Baptist Church. A graduate of Frederick Douglass High School, Morgan State University, Howard University and Virginia Seminary where he received his Doctorate of Divinity Degree. Dr. Ray received his call to the Christian Ministry in 1954 while attending Lott Carey Foreign Youth Convention at Vermont Avenue Baptist Church in Washington, D. C. In June of that same year he delivered his initial sermon. He was later ordained on August 31, 1962 by the Morning Star Baptist Church.

From 1961 to 1963 Rev. Ray served as pastor of First Baptist Church of Mt. Winans. In 1964 Dr. Ray served as Superintendent of the Lott Carey Foreign Mission School. During which time he and his wife (the late Chestine A. Ray) went to Liberia West Africa as Missionaries. They returned to the United States in 1966.

Dr. Ray was installed as the Pastor of the Morning Star Baptist Church on Sunday, December 17, 1967. In the 118 year history of the church, Dr. Ray is only the 4th Pastor.

He believes that the church must reach out to reaffirm Christian ethics. In 1971, these beliefs led him to initiate an outdoor ministry on the parking lot of Morning Star Baptist Church of Christ. These services were later moved to nearby Franklin Square. This move was necessary to accommodate the growing number of people that flocked to each service to hear the word of God. What started as a one evangelistic movement quickly grew to two weeks. This also became a model for outdoor services in and around Baltimore City. In conjunction with the outdoor Evangelistic services, a two week Vacation Church School was started. This Christian education ministry was eventually expanded to six weeks to meet the needs and demands of the community.

Dr. Ray's willingness to open his pulpit to young ministers for experience, mentorship, guidance and wisdom has earned him the title of "The Preacher's Pastor." Dr. Ray believes that visitation of the sick and shut-in is one of the most crucial and vital ministries of the Pastor. His love and prayers are extended not only to his membership, but to anyone who is blessed enough to come in contact with him during one of these many, many visits. Doctors, nurses, aides, roommates and visitors, have all been recipients of the prayers and outpouring of love from the Lord and Dr. Ray.

The year, 2015 finds Reverend Dr. Samuel Ray celebrating 48 years as Pastor of the Morning Star Baptist Church of Christ.
