On Sunday December 17, 1967, Reverend Samuel Ray, a
son of Morning Star, was installed as the fourth elected pastor. He came on
board when materialism, violence and corruption not only affected society,
but was causing unrest in the church. Believing that the church must reach
out to reaffirm Christian ethics, the doors of the church were opened even
wider to the community. To underscore the belief that the church should be
an integral part of the community and witness to all, Reverend Ray adopted
the motto, "The Witnessing Church". The hallmarks of his pastorate have been
outreach programs of evangelism.

Rev. Dr. Samuel Ray

In order to accommodate the expanding church program and to support the educational ministry of the church, Reverend Ray immediately spearheaded a drive to obtain the properties adjacent to the church. His untiring effort bore fruit five years after his installation as pastor. A Christian Educational Center, containing such conveniences as an elevator; a well-equipped kitchen; three offices, several classrooms; a library; and health area; was built to serve the church and the community. Over the years, other improvements included the addition of a parking lot, the purchase of an air conditioner, and the location of the baptismal pool to the main sanctuary.
Reverend Ray saw the need to assist the elderly and physically challenged to the worship services. The first church bus was purchased in 1968. Since that time two additional buses were acquired. These buses have been used extensively for all types of church activities.
Ever concerned about the quality of all church programs, Reverend Ray initiated a reorganization of the choirs to merge those that complemented each other. He also supported the efforts of the clubs and organizations to merge for unity and strength as they sought to function to the Glory of God.
Reverend Ray's concern for those in need resulted in numerous programs, within and without the walls of the church. His pastorate is noted for its continuing emphasis on programs for the young, elderly, and disfranchised.
Reverend Ray had unfailing support in the person of his late wife, Mrs. Chestine A. Ray, who passed to Glory on March 23, 1997. Their three children, Jonathan, Teri, and Dawn are faithful workers who continue to share their special talents.
Many descendants of the members from the formative years are active workers in the Church today. These dedicated members, along with Reverend Ray, Reverend Clarence Fowler- the Assistant Pastor, and all of the Associate Ministers, remain committed to doing the work of the Lord.
